An integrated pest-management approach works best for keeping rats out of your home and around your property. Rat prevention is essential for the safety of your family and part of that is trimming trees, shrubs and maintaining a clean roof.

Rats thrive in a mature landscape. Trim tree branches so they are not in contact with fences, wires, rooftops and other tree branches as rodents use them as their “highways”. The branches of the trees should be pruned to at least 3 feet from the ground and with palm trees 3 feet from the home or building. Trim the lower branches of shrubs 3 feet away as well to expose the rats and increase their vulnerability to their natural predators (natures best pest control).

Practicing proper sanitation to get rid of rats is always important. Remove all items that are attracting the rats. Low hanging fruit from fruit trees, bird and squire food are going to be a great step in keeping rodents out of your home. Cleaning out your gutters and clearing roof valleys of all debris is just as important as trimming your trees. Rat’s love running under the debris to keep them safe from predators and it makes for easy nesting.

If you find yourself with a rodent problem call Miller’s Rodent and Wildlife Solutions at (941)-302-6009 to schedule your inspection and leave the rat trapping to the experts.
