Why companies specializing in wildlife removal is best over “pest” control companies.

Updated: Jan 14, 2019

Pest control companies typically treat for insects and use poison control methods to do so. They usually spray poison on the yard or house, and charge for monthly or quarterly maintenance where as a wildlife company like Miller's Wildlife Services will be a "one and done" services not needing repeat visits. Pest control companies use the same methods - poisons - when they try to control mice & rats (this is a LOUSY AND INEFFECTIVE approach, read our blog post on “Why we don’t use poison”) and even have been known to illegally try to use poisons on other animals, such as bats. Wildlife control, of large animals like squirrels or raccoons is entirely different than insect pest control and should be dealt with only by a professional nuisance wildlife trapper who has extensive experience dealing with wild animals. You can't just use some magic spray or device to get rid of a large vertebrate - it involves hands-on removal of animals, not a simple spray solution. If you do call your regular exterminator to take care of a wildlife issue, beware - they may recommend a crummy company who gives them a cash kickback. Do your own research when hiring a wildlife professional. Read their reviews, ask if they are licensed and insured and overall make sure they practice humane trapping.

There is a marked difference between pest control companies and wildlife control companies in terms of their specializations within the animal control space. And any homeowner looking to hire a professional to solve their wildlife control problem had better be informed about it. While searching for a professional to help with your wildlife problem in the local yellow pages or on a search engine for instance, don’t look at providers listed under Pest Control or Pest Exterminator. You would get better results when you search under the Animal Removal, Wildlife Control section or searching for the specific animal you are wanting removed (i.e. rat trappers or raccoon trappers).

There is a marked difference between how a professional wildlife control company and “pest” control company will deal with prevention from re-entry to your home or property. Wildlife control companies such as Miller’s Wildlife Services use multiple materials to insure your intruder will not re-enter. Pest control typically only use spray foam. There are a few problems with this technique. The biggest is that animals like rats, mice and squirrels can and will easily chew straight through the foam and larger animals like raccoons and opossums will simply tear it out leaving your property exposed all over again. Another reason is your homes aesthetics. The spray foam alone can be an eye sore so using more than one material is important to keep the “curb appeal” and over all clean look.
